Cisco designs future-proofed workplace at PENN 1 in NYC

PENN 1 in NYC, a testing ground for future workplaces, now serves as a global blueprint, powered by Cisco technology.

The business need

Cisco needed to modernize its underutilized and outdated office at PENN 1 in New York City for new hybrid work models.

Challenge

Cisco needed to address its underutilized, outdated real estate portfolio in the shadow of the pandemic to create an office that was safe, sustainable, and a place where employees would want to come work.

  • Mismatched workforce and workplace strategies: The NYC office spaces were no longer fit for form and function and new ways of working. Cisco needed to place more emphasis on collaboration and employee experience and wellbeing
  • Lack of data insights: Cisco needed a way to visualize the existing workplace data from across the network and get it into the hands of workplace planning, real estate and IT teams who could utilize it for informed decision making.
  • Designing for the future: The new workplace needed to be equipped to evolve for future needs.
  • Sustainability and efficiency: Cisco needed to improve energy usage to help advance net-zero sustainability goals.

Solution

Cisco real estate, IT, and workforce resources teams worked together to redesign the Cisco office at PENN 1 in New York City with best-in-class Cisco technology to create a sustainable, positive working environment for employees.

Outcomes

Frictionless experiences and increased productivity

100% of spaces in the new office are video enabled, and we increased the number of collaboration spaces by 40%. We're connecting people in new ways when they're in the office, while still being inclusive of remote participants.

Space optimization and cost savings

The new space allowed for a 5% reduction in CapEx and 2X the number of people to be accommodated in half the space, with a variety of different room designs tailored to cater to a variety of different working styles and needs.

Energy efficiency and sustainability

Energy decreased by 36% purely from the change in design, without taking into account the floor plan reduction. We eliminated the need for 3,000 lbs of steel and 1,000 lbs of copper wiring material by deploying PoE infrastructure.

Wellness and user experience

With 20% of the world’s population being neurodiverse, we designed the office to cater to varying sensory and space needs with optimized acoustics and personalized light and temperature controls.

Hear from the team

Bob Cicero, Future-Proofed Workplaces for Real Estate Leader and Mark Miller, Director, Collaboration Center of Excellence, explain how integrating networking and collaboration into the very fabric of the building enabled us to transform PENN 1 into a hub of innovation and sustainability that is truly a magnet for our employees.
